One assumption I had about marketing that has been contradicted since I have started at my internship, was that marketing only consists of advertising. I now have 2 mentors at two different places and even though they are both very different, neither one consists of only advertisement. I have to file quite often. I have also learned that even though marketing directors aren't always associated with the volunteer coordinator or executive director, they are always communicating with them. However, even though I found this out, I still want to pursue marketing as a career.
There are many important skills for someone working in the marketing field. For example, teamwork is a necessity. The marketing director has to be informed and in contact with everyone in the office. Just so they don't miss anything and they can market what they need to for each administrative staff member. Communication is also important for the same reason. People in the marketing field also need to be able to learn new technology easily. Since I have started, I have been introduced to many new programs and I am on the computer every day. Therefore, when I go into the marketing field, I must be able to adjust to technology since it seems as though it is always changing. They also must be innovative in order to come up with unique marketing strategies so that the target market can be reached efficiently.

11.30 Assignment
My Essential Question:
I use social media nearly everyday at my mentorship, compare and contrast how technology in marketing has changed from 2005 to 2015?What excites me most about this question is being able to apply the research I do to my mentorship. Also, I will also be able to compare the information I find to be able to do the same project after I graduate from college. It will only be a 5 year difference from now, but I think social media and technology will continue to change drastically.
I do feel like this question accurately reflects a desire/need that I have to find out more about this topic. This is the topic I did my annotated bibliography on and it was very interseting to me then, and this was only a short article. I do feel like I will learn a lot from this project and it will help me use social media and technology in both on my mentorships.

11/16 Assignment

There are several challenges youth may face in the workplace One of them is that they might lack what they need in order to get the job. WE have not yet learned soft skills and how to interview well. If we do get the job, we often face the challenge of not knowing what is expected of us. We might keep a cluttered workplace, we might not show up on time, or we may not have a strong work ethic. Since we have not had a job, we think it is okay to work the same way we live: cluttered and lazily. Another challenge we may face is our sense of identity. Most of us think we know who we are but we base it on the outside qualities such as appearance and clothing style. So when asked to change this "identity," we are not open to the suggestion. Since no one has ever taught us how to act on the job and we haven't had much working experience before, we struggle regularly with things that older workers may not. I also think since technology is so prominent, my generation never learned how to communicate. We always text someone instead of calling them or talking to them in person. This is not necessarily anyone persons fault, the advance on technology is mostly to blame. However, the youth are at fault because we never put the technology on the back burner and focus on true social interaction. Our parents are also partially to blame, because they allowed us to turn to technology rather than using our imagination for play or visiting someone to talk to them.
Social intelligence is the ability to understand and manage men, women, and children, to act wisely in human interaction. The quality of a first impression and a lasting impression depends heavily on social intelligence. Social intelligence is needed in not only jobs and college, but it is needed in everyday life. We must be able to develop relationships with people in a face to face manner. Professional relationships can't be made through a phone or computer screen. My generation struggles with this because we never had to develop relationships with anyone without using technology.
Social intelligence is important everyone must be able to develop healthy social relationships. Having social intelligence and being able to develop relationships, sets a person ahead in the workplace. They show that they have the capability to be a leader and to teacher to others. It proves to employers that the person is a good candidate for the job and they will go far in the business world.
One thing about this article that spoke to me personally was the amount of youth that doesn't know how to make a strong first impression or interview well. Since I do pageants, I interview quite frequently. It is definitely a something I had to learn how to do well but I guess I never considered how well rounded or not other teens are during interviews. It never crossed my mind that they don't get the practice like I do. I was able to connect to the article because it explained me very well when I first started interviews for pageants.

11.9.15 Assignment
This month at my mentorship, I have been busy preparing promotional items, attending events and preparing for the Homeowner Orientation. I attended the Mule Camp festival where I sold tickets for Battle of the Builders, the annual raffle of playhouses built by Hall County High school students. I have also moved offices so I spent a majority of a week organizing all of the marketing materials I had. I also spent time locating all of the marketing materials that had been stored in various locations around the store due to not having a specific office or location for marketing items. Once I was settled into my new office, I was able to start attempting to list items on Ebay. I did run into some complications with our Ebay account that still haven't been completely settled so I have not yet listed any items. I do however, have everything prepared, such as the pictures and the description, so that when the issues are worked out, I will be able to immediately list items. The whole process of trying to fix the Ebay account has taught me a lot that I never thought I would experience at my mentorship. The Director of Finance is not in her office during the same ours that I have been so we have had to overcome the communication problems in order to work together to be able to list on Ebay. I have also had to contact Ebay's customer service, this showed me how to handle issues that I didn't think I would have to deal with.
The one class in all of my high school career that has helped me in my mentorship is the Marketing Principles class I am currently taking. It is hard for me to say which one helps the other more, both my mentorship and the class go hand in hand. The class has educated me on many marketing terms and techniques that I have used at my mentorship and my mentorship has presented me with opportunities to experience everything we talk about in the class. Both have increased my understanding in marketing since I am sitting in a classroom learning all about marketing during 5th period then I come directly to my mentorship for 6th and 7th period to utilize the skills and information I have learned.

11.2.15 Assignment
In regards to my mentorship site, Habitat for Humanity, I feel as though they are a partner in my education because not only have I learned many valuable life skills and job skills, I have also learned more about the career I want to pursue. They have enabled me to see most aspects of marketing, including the ones that nobody wants to do. My mentorship has also helped me in my marketing class. Rather than just learning about marketing techniques, I am actually experiencing them first hand. I have found that I do well in my marketing class and I feel it is due to what my mentorship has taught me and all the knowledge I have gained from being here. I also feel like I am one step ahead of other high school students that may want to pursue marketing but don't have and internship opportunity available to them. Since I am already experiencing the marketing pathway, I am able to definitely say this is the career I wish to go into after college. Other students may not realize what marketing entails or they might not be positive on the career they want to pursue.
My supervisor and mentor tell me often that I have made their lives easier. Since I am mentoring at a non-profit, there are not as many employees as a bigger company would have, such as Coca-cola. I have been able to do the work that was previously delegated to the employees even though it was not necessarily in their job description. One of the goals I have met so far at my mentorship has been discovering if I truly want to pursue marketing. I realized about a month into my mentorship that I definitely want to pursue marketing as a career. I am glad I have completed this goal because now I can dedicate myself to marketing the Restore rather than trying to think of another career field I would be interested in before college. Some of my goals have changed, this is only because I wasn't sure what to expect when I began my mentorship. Now, my goals are tailored to fit my duties at the Restore. I have also created weekly and monthly goals for myself, depending on what project I am working on. These goals may change from week to week, as soon as I accomplish one goal, I am moving on to the next.

My profile: When I was in 8th grade, I took the Computer Applications class. We were required to complete the career survey on GACollege411. My number one pathway match was one that related to sales and marketing. I started researching the marketing career path to see if it was anything I was interested in. I then became more and more intrigued by TV and magazine advertisements, and the marketing strategies behind them. I soon realized how much I loved marketing and I started researching specific careers within the marketing umbrella. I discovered "brand managers" and I became interested. Through my internship, I have realized that this is definitely the path I want to pursue and hopefully fulfill my dreams of one day becoming a brand manager for Disney.
My internship: I am currently interning at Habitat for Humanity Restore for two periods. I am mentoring with Andi Harmon, the Operations Director. My responsibilities include printing, folding, and cutting any promotional materials such as flyers and brochures. I am also in charge of all of the social media accounts. I have to make regular posts on Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter. I also use Hootsuite for most of the social media usage. Hootsuite is a dashboard that allows me to post to all of our social media accounts at one time. One of the activities that was recently delegated to me is researching and listing items on Ebay. When an item is donated that doesn't seem to sell in the store, I look it up on Ebay to see what it sells for then I list the item for about the same price. We have only had a couple of events since I have been there but they were early in my mentorship, but for future events, it will be my responsibility to pack all of the supplies needed. I am currently taking Marketing Principles at school and the class has helped me immensely at my internship. I now know how to help with the marketing plan and how to determine who to advertise by identifying the target market.
My future: Next year, I plan on attending UNG Dahlonega to attain a bachelors degree in Marketing. I am planning to complete a semester of the Disney College Program either my junior or senior year. Once I graduate, I want to move to Florida and either get an internship in the marketing department or apply for an spot on the marketing team.

10.19 Assignment
My perception about how Habitat for Humanity operates has changed since I started my internship. I did not realize how much work went into building just one house or attending just one event. I always thought they just found volunteers to help build the house then they hand over the keys to the owner at the end. I have learned that there are many different roles that make one house possible. Since the administration space is so small, it is not uncommon to hear or experience some of the every day conversations or duties of the employees. Two things have surprised me the most, the amount of work and people involved in building one house and the amount of people willing to donate their time either on a build site or in the Restore. It seems like every day, I am telling someone how to volunteer with us or I meet a new volunteer. The volunteers that I meet come don't just volunteer once because "they need the hours," they truly seem to enjoy it because they come back on a regular basis.
At Habitat for Humanity, even though there is a routine, however the things I get to see everyday as part of that routine change frequently. For example, since I post our items on social media, it often gets boring and repetitive, but I get to see all of the new products and i'm never posting anything that I've posted before. What I have learned from a routine, is that I always know what needs to be done. Before a routine was established, it was never known what I would be doing from day to day. Now, I schedule social media posts the first day of the week, then I am post listings on Ebay, and I know to then fold any promotional materials once I finish all of my other jobs. I have realized that a routine encourages me to be more efficient with my work because I know exactly when my next task starts and how long I have to finish my current task or project.

Annotated Bibliography Reflection- 10.5 Assignment
This article fits into my potential research because it provides all the statistics of social media in marketing, it includes the positive and the negative facts. It gave me insight as to why and how it is harder for small businesses to market themselves with social media sites than it is for large companies such as Coca-Cola. It also showed me how much social media usage has changed in just a couple of years. It went from not many businesses having any kind of social media site to essentially being requirement for businesses to have a site in order to compete with others.
This article was very helpful, not only as research for a potential paper but it will also help me at my mentorship. For example, social media sites were listed in the article that I had never heard of, such at Hootsuite and Facebook Insights. I will be able to use these sites at my mentorship. The article also referenced a multitude of other articles, this will lead me to more research I could use for a potential paper. I will be able to use the article in many places in a potential paper. I can use all of the quotes from the other scholarly articles referenced or use the statistics that are found throughout the article. I will also be able to use the marketing vocabulary I learned from this article in a potential paper and even in my mentorship or future workplaces. Some of the terms that were new to me were return on investment (ROI) and impact of relationships (IOR).
Overall, the article will be very helpful. It provides lots of insight for a potential research paper. It also taught me some things I needed to know in order to maximize my opportunity at my mentorship. The article has also made me want to research business use of social media more in depth since this article was so interesting and taught me so much that I never would have known otherwise.

Time Management and Juggling Responsibilities-9/8 Assignment
Between my internship, normal classwork, extracurricular activities, and volunteer work, my schedule can get quite stressful. In order to manage my time well, I keep a very strict schedule for each day. I write exactly what I do at each time of the day, for example for Thursday the 10th, my schedule had school from 8:25-1:45, my internship from 2:15-5 and cheer practice from 6-8. I then figure out what time I have available for homework and free time. I then figure out how long I will have to spend on each subject for school. At my internship, I have anywhere from one big project a day, to 3-4 smaller projects each day. When I arrive, I sit down and plan out how long I will spend on each project. This helps me manage my time and it also helps me be more efficient on my tasks. Without managing my time, I would get to half of the things I need to complete each day.
Time management is necessary in my internship and career field because like I said, I could have anywhere from 1 big project to 3-4 smaller projects within two hours. In marketing, every project has to be done by a specific date so the marketing work will be useful and efficient. Also, since there are so many daily projects, it is necessary to manage when you will work on each task in order to get all of them done.

http://growingleaders.com/blog/
The blog post written by Tim Elmore, the link can be found above, explains how interns can make the most of their time at their internship and make their mentors not regret the decision to take on the intern. He explained that interns needs to think of their internship as a twelve-week interview, just because we land the spot, doesn't mean we shouldn't continue trying our hardest. The four most admired qualities of an intern are teachability, initiative, responsibility, and energy. These four qualities lead to a good experience for both mentor and intern.
The way I am going to apply what I learned from this article is try to become someone who has all four of the admired qualities. I will do this by taking every assignment and putting 110% into the product, no matter how minuscule the task is. Now that I have this advice, I will walk into my mentorship every day keeping in mind that it is another day of an interview. I am going to make sure I put more effort into educating people as to how they can volunteer with Habitat for Humanity rather than just letting people know where I'm interning. I will make sure my main yearly assignment, keeping up with the business cards and brochures, is what I put most of my energy and focus into. I will also make sure that as soon as I finish one task, I am offering to do the next task.
The part of this article I felt is most relevant, is the statement that an internship is a twelve-week interview. For me, it will be a one-year interview. This is so relevant because due to my position, I will be attending all Habitat for Humanity events such as charity events, Rotary meetings, and any award ceremonies for staff members. So I will be meeting new people weekly that I can build a business relationship with. While I will be there to promote Habitat, I will also be promoting myself in the way that I present myself and the company and how I interact with high ranking members of society.

Work Ethics
The work ethics assignment analyzed interpersonal, initiative, and dependability after asking 50 questions on these topics. It then configured an individual score based on how you answered the survey questions. My personal score was 6.62 out of 7 for interpersonal which is the life skills we use everyday to communicate and interact with other people. My score was higher than that of an average female which was 6.00 out of 7. My score for initiative was 6.19 out of 7. This score was also higher that the score of the average female worker which was 5.67. I earned a 6.86 out of 7 in the last category, dependability. This was also slightly higher than the average woman, which is 6.34.
I learned a couple of things about myself, some of it was because I did not know some of the traits fell under either interpersonal, initiative, or dependability. All of my scores were much higher than I expected them to be. I believe part of the reason I got high scores is because of my strong work ethic I have developed due to yearbook. It has taught me that I am the only one responsible for my assigned task and I must have the initiative to complete it. It has also made me dependable to other people. As for my interpersonal skills, I am very involved in pageants and volunteering and it has helped develop me speaking skills whether it is a formal or informal occasion.

Communication
There are many different ways to communicate, and only certain forms of communication is appropriate with certain people. For example, you would always want to have a serious, calm, and nice tone of voice when talking to an employer or parents but while talking with friends, it's okay to have a more playful tone of voice. While listening to people, it is okay with most friends if you are not directly looking at them, however, with employers it is best to look them in the eye to imply you are listening and taking in everything they have to say. Body language also varies, depending on who you are communicating with. You might show playful body language or not so great posture while talking with friends or family, but with employers it is important to have good posture and well controlled body language. Written communication is also very different, it is okay to text in abbreviations and texting language to your friends. Texts or emails to family needs everything to be completely written out but it does not need to be formal. Any written communication with an employer needs to be formal with no abbreviations. Each situation is different because you are not trying to impress friends or family but a good impressions need to be made on employers.
Friends do not expect much in conversation. They expect a decent listener and someone to keep the conversation going. They do not normally expect a formal conversation every time, conversations between friends are normally very informal. Family members expect someone who will listen but also contribute to the conversation. These conversations are a little less informal but not completely formal either. Lastly, an employer expects much more than friends and family. They expect a great listener, someone who could carry on the conversation, and someone who can carry on a conversation with substance, rather than just gossip and drama. Conversations with employers are expected to be very formal.
There are a couple things I will keep in mind when talking to my mentor. The first thing is answering question with quality answers rather than just one word answers. Another would be my listening skills, I will make sure my only focus is my mentor rather than everything else that is going on at that moment. I will also keep my body language, eye contact, and posture in mind as that can make a good or bad impression without even saying anything. I will also pay attention to the communication style of my mentor and coworkers. I will make it my goal everyday to communicate well with everyone keeping the fact that my mentor could be a future professional reference.

In order to make the most of your internship, you must be responsible, discuss details, observe the environment, clarify job expectations, and many more. Always arrive early and be professional. This means respecting a dress code and following any rules your workplace may have. Always discuss details of whats expected, a new project, or any other topics where questions may arise. All supervisors and mentors manage differently so be observant and get a feel for whats expected so you can fit in and feel comfortable. It is important to always know job expectations, but it is just as important for the mentor to know your goals. Talk about this so you can maximize your internship experience.
Always show enthusiasm in a workplace, you never know when you will need a professional reference and you want to do everything you can to impress your mentor. This is also why you should always do your best work, never slack off. Do every task without complaining and act like you are glad to do the what may be a repetitive task. Immerse yourself in every project or assignment. This is your chance to learn as much as you can about a specific industry to see if you are truly interested. Take initiate on projects and assignments, it will impress a mentor that much more. This is also your chance to network with business professionals. Always introduce yourself and learn about everyone's experiences and what they did to get where they are. An internship would also be a good way to build your career portfolio, always keep an extra copy of every assignment or project to show to possible future employers.
This article was very helpful especially the "Seven Strategies to Get the Most from Your Experience." It got the point across that everything I do can either help me or hurt me further in life. It is up to me what I do in a workplace and these seven strategies will definitely get me far if I choose to follow them. It also emphasized that even right before I finish my internship, I still need to give it my all. This will leave a good lasting impression on my mentor and provide me with positive professional references in the future when I'm looking for work in my field.

One thing in JD Russo's speech was the knowledge my generation has but the lack of care to do anything with it. This applies directly to my peers and I, pertaining soft skills. I do believe everyone I go to school with has seen or learned about soft skills such as leadership, communication, and collaboration but not all of us are given the opportunities to utilize them, therefore, high school students think they are worthless because they were not used in school everyday. With having the Honors Mentorship Program, it will give me the chance to use soft skills and realize their importance rather than just learning about them in a classroom.
Statement:
Since I am involved in pageants, I am looked upon as a leader by many. One thing that I would love to become an agent for change for would be hunger in America rather than other nations.

8/7/15 Assignment
One important point from the podcast was the first impression information. The way you carry yourself, the attitude you have and the way you dress can say a lot about yourself. Since first impressions are created within the first 10 seconds and that impression can carry on and contribute to the employers opinion of you, it is important to create a good first impression.
Another important point made in the podcast was how to act during the first couple of weeks on the job/ internship. It is important to ask questions, get to know your employees and coworkers, gaining an understanding of how the company works, and asking for more tasks. If you prove you have initiative to push forward and dedication to the company, it will get you farther than if you complete the bare minimum. Creating relationships in the workplace is great, you never know when you will get a promotion or a recommendation later in life.
I can't choose just one important point in the handout, the whole handout seems equally important. It explains how important it is to get to know your mentor. You are at the internship to learn from the mentor and gain experiences. If you get to know your mentor, it can truly help you in your career. Your mentor can point you in the right direction as far as schooling, where to look for jobs, and and how to get where you want to be.
One thing I envision gaining from my mentorship is experience. I expect I will learn things about the marketing field that I would never learn by sitting in a desk in a classroom. I will ensure I get the most from this experience by always asking for more tasks and taking in everything my mentor has to offer. This will prepare me for my future by helping me figure out if I truly want to go into the marketing field. This will also help me in the future by providing references in the field.
